Double Oaked Bee Sting is the kind of beer that makes you stop for a second after the first sip and just admire the idea behind it. A strong honey ale already sounds like a great base for something special, but Town Hall Brewery took it much further, first resting it in a Northern Kentucky bourbon barrel that had been toasted and charred, then finishing it in a Blue Weber Agave AƱejo tequila barrel from Jalisco, Mexico. At 16.6% ABV, it sounds like it should be a bruiser, but this one leans into depth, character, and slow-sipping elegance instead.
Double Oaked Bee Sting
Poured into the glass, Double Oaked Bee Sting shows off a clear golden yellow body with a frothy white head that rises quickly from a hard pour, then disappears just as fast, leaving no lacing and almost no visible trace behind. Once settled, the beer looks nearly still in the glass, giving it an almost brandy-like presence before you even bring it to your nose.
The aroma opens with sweet honey and a light berry note, followed by soft citrus and an unmistakable tequila presence. There is a small touch of caramel underneath, along with a dab of lemon and sweet apple. As it warms, more depth begins to emerge. Toffee starts showing itself more clearly, following the initial agave liquor impression and helping round out what first seems like a wild combination into something that feels thoughtful and layered.
The flavor lands with sweet honey and golden malt filling the mouth right away. A light touch of caramel and citrus follows, while hints of bourbon, char, and oak give the beer a firm structure beneath the sweeter notes. After the swallow, the honey begins to dry out and the tequila barrel character steps forward more confidently, bringing mellow lemon, soft floral notes, and a distinct agave edge that adds brightness without turning sharp. The booze is absolutely present, but it never overwhelms the experience. This is a beer built for slow sipping, whether by a small dip or a slightly bigger swallow, and it keeps rewarding patience. Even after the aftertaste fades, a little bourbon warmth remains in the throat as a final reminder of the path this beer took to get here.
A Wild Idea That Somehow Feels Perfectly Measured
What makes Double Oaked Bee Sting so impressive is how easily this concept could have gone sideways. A strong honey ale aged in bourbon barrels and then tequila barrels sounds like the kind of thing that could become messy, hot, or gimmicky in lesser hands. Instead, it feels composed. Every part of the process leaves a mark, but none of them dominate the whole. The honey gives it its identity, the bourbon barrel gives it weight and richness, and the agave barrel brings a bright, floral, slightly citrusy lift that transforms the finish into something memorable.
This is a brilliantly original beer that completely earns its ambition. Big, boozy, and undeniably unique, Double Oaked Bee Sting delivers layer after layer while still drinking with surprising grace. Town Hall has made something that feels inventive without ever losing sight of balance, and that is what makes this one such a standout.
