Ten years is a long time in the craft beer world, and Modist Brewing Company decided to mark the milestone in a way that fits their style perfectly. Instead of something quick and flashy, they reached deep into the barrel program and pulled out batch 666, a monster that spent over 52 months resting in Blanton’s bourbon barrels before being conditioned on toasted coconut, pecans, cocoa nibs, and vanilla beans. At 16.66% ABV, Modist X isn’t just a beer, it’s a statement.
Modist X
This imperial stout pours a murky black, with a head of fine, deep brown bubbles that fizzle away almost as quickly as they form. What’s left behind is where things get interesting. Speckles of toasted coconut, cocoa nibs, and vanilla beans cling to the walls of the glass, while each swirl leaves behind a thick, oily film that hints at just how dense this beer really is.
The aroma leans heavily into dessert territory. Sweet bourbon and vanilla lead the way, backed by creamy caramel and a distinct nuttiness from the pecans. As it warms, deeper layers start to open up, bringing warm baking chocolate and even more vanilla into the mix, like a German chocolate cake fresh out of the oven with a splash of bourbon poured over the top.
The first sip confirms everything the nose promises. A super silky malt body coats the entire mouth, delivering waves of chocolate, caramel, and rich vanilla right up front. The pecans add a subtle nuttiness that keeps the sweetness from going too far, while the bourbon weaves its way through each layer, tying everything together. As it settles, that warmth builds slowly, leaving a long, lingering bourbon presence that sticks around well after the last sip.
For a beer pushing 16.66% ABV, it’s remarkably smooth. The alcohol is clearly there, but it never overwhelms the experience. Instead, it enhances it, adding depth and warmth without turning harsh.
A Decade Worth the Wait
Modist X feels like exactly what an anniversary beer should be. Big, layered, a little indulgent, and built to be savored slowly. The extended barrel aging shows in every sip, bringing a level of integration and complexity that you just don’t get without time.
It’s not a casual drink. It’s a sit down, take your time, and let it evolve kind of beer. And for a 10 year celebration, that feels exactly right. Cheers to Modist for a decade in, and for proving that sometimes the best move is to just let something incredible sit and become even better.
